10 October: Major climate strike in Vienna
In October, it will be that time again: Fridays for Future and numerous other environmental organisations are once again calling for a large demonstration in Vienna to loudly demonstrate for climate justice.
The draft climate bill is here, but climate protection is missing. The government's promise of climate neutrality by 2040 is nowhere to be found. The whole country is under pressure to save money, and yet 5.7 billion euros are being burned through tax breaks for coal, oil and gas! Penalties running into billions are being accepted, which will be due if the EU targets are not met. Fridays for Future is calling for binding climate neutrality by 2040, clear sector targets and sanctions if the targets are not met.
The climate crisis is deeply socially unjust. It hits hardest those who are already under pressure. And it has long been difficult to believe that “everything will be fine”. But we know that action prevents worse things from happening in the long term. Nothing has ever changed politically “on its own”. Strikes have already achieved a lot.
‘We will remain steadfast. Even if politicians do not. We will remain vocal. Even if we are told that it is no longer an issue. Because the climate crisis affects every single area of our lives,’ says Fridays for Future.
