Four of a Kind: Construction of Four New Wind Turbines in Großkrut and Poysdorf Has Begun

For several weeks now, four new wind turbines have been under construction in the municipal areas of Großkrut and Poysdorf. The new “Großkrut-Poysdorf” wind farm is being built by the three operators Windkraft Simonsfeld, EVN and ImWind, a subsidiary of Wien Energie, and has a total capacity of 28 MW. Enough to supply around 20,000 households with locally generated wind power.

At a meeting to mark the start of construction, Member of the Lower Austrian State Parliament Manfred Schulz, the mayor and vice mayor of the host municipalities, and representatives of the operators get a first-hand impression of the initial construction work on site.

Member of the Lower Austrian State Parliament Manfred Schulz states: “In Lower Austria, we have consistently relied on electricity generation from renewable energy sources such as wind power for many years. In doing so, we are making a decisive contribution to strengthening energy independence and can rightly describe ourselves as Austria's driving force in green electricity generation.”

The four new wind turbines are scheduled to be fully constructed by autumn 2027.

The Großkrut-Poysdorf wind farm project:

  • Joint project by EVN, ImWind and Windkraft Simonsfeld

  • 4 wind turbines (28 MW in total)

  • Start of construction: Summer 2026

  • Planned commissioning: Autumn 2027

  • Electricity for around 20,000 households

  • Annual CO2 savings of around 38,500 tonnes

Markus Winter, Chief Technical Officer of Windkraft Simonsfeld: “We are pleased that the new wind farm allows us to continue our long-standing cooperation with the municipalities of Poysdorf and Großkrut. Every single wind turbine counts when it comes to ensuring a secure and independent domestic electricity supply. This will enable Lower Austria to further strengthen its pioneering role in the expansion of regional renewable energy.”

Mayor of the Town of Poysdorf Gudrun Sperner-Habitzl: “Wind power has been part of our municipality for more than 20 years. A lot has happened since then. What has not changed, however, is that we are making a statement in favour of greater independence and regionality.”

Vice Mayor of the Market Town of Großkrut Ludwig Huber: “As a municipality, we are taking responsibility for the energy transition. The use of wind power shows that climate protection, security of supply and regional development can successfully go hand in hand.”

EVN Spokesman of the Executive Board Stefan Szyszkowitz: “Lower Austria's municipalities are our most important partners on the path towards further expanding wind power. We would therefore like to thank the municipalities of Großkrut and Poysdorf already at this stage and look forward to commissioning the Großkrut-Poysdorf wind farm next year.”

Alma Kahler, Managing Director of Wien Energie: “Wind power is a key pillar of tomorrow's energy system. With the start of construction in Großkrut and Poysdorf, we are resolutely driving forward the expansion of renewable energy. In this way, we are creating the conditions for a reliable and future-proof electricity supply.”

Karl Gruber, Managing Director of ImWind: “When it comes to expanding wind power, we make faster progress together. In Großkrut and Poysdorf, three experienced operators are pooling their expertise and implementing a project that will supply around 20,000 households with clean electricity in the future. Every new wind turbine brings us one step closer to an independent and affordable electricity supply.”
